MULBERRY NETWORK
CLIMATE PROTEST AND RESISTANCE ART:
JOIN THE NETWORK
Political leadership is changing in the United States. But the climate emergency remains, and the window for action is closing. Protest and social movements to drive climate action – including through art – have never been more urgent.
The Crow's Nest art incubator in Baltimore is building a climate protest art network, which we are calling the Mulberry Network after the street on which our building sits.
Mulberry Network artists are interested in collaborating with climate activists engaged in non-violent direct action (marches, disruptions, demonstrations) in the DC-Baltimore area by producing protest / resistance art that can be used in direct action.
Mulberry Network artists should be willing to meet with activists, learn about their direct action campaign priorities and objectives, and if commissioned, be willing to produce artwork in a relatively short time to support the protest actions. Art may include posters, banners, installations, animations, illustrations, and projections. Artists are not expected (but are welcome) to participate in the direct actions.
Artists who join the Mulberry Network will be put in contact with specific climate activist organizations that have expressed openness to introducing art into their activism. The Crow’s Nest will make those connections and provide pop-up studio space and / or organizing space to support projects commissioned through the Network.
Activists will be expected to provide honorariums to all Network artists. It is up to the artist to decide if they will reduce fees or volunteer work for the cause. Artists are encouraged to ask for the full value of their labor and form a contract with individual activist organizations as to timelines, delivery, and expectations.
