Claiming the Future

claimingthefuture - Lychee.png

In collaboration with Youth Climate Institute, we challenged high school students and undergraduates to "Claim the Future" with their art. We are proud to show over 50 pieces of art from schools across Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The Crow’s Nest is delighted to showcase our first student exhibit. We invited students to make art expressing their desires for climate solutions and the future they hope to live in. Making artwork from hope and desire is incredibly vulnerable, and we are astounded by the range of works made for this exhibit– showcasing native wildflowers, resilience, green architecture, and simply facing the idea of aging without fear. We are grateful to YCI, whose partnership enabled us to connect to schools and students across the region.

6 students will be awarded as finalists during our opening reception on June 13th. First through 3rd place will receive a small cash prize. Judging was done in collaboration with YCI as well as Jurors Rejjia Camphor and Rachel Stein.

June 27th-- Starting at 1:30 PM

Local artist and organizer Naina Gupta will teach a guided zine-making workshop as part of the “Claiming the Future” exhibition. Participants will imagine different futures and create speculative zines about them using simple illustration and collage. In this workshop, they will learn a brief history of zines as a tool for collective action, brainstorm together, learn simple zine making techniques, assemble and design their zines, and share collectively.
Participants are encouraged to think about what they want from their future, how the future might look different from the present, and what actions we can take to get there.

Materials will be provided and all experience levels are welcome! Donations appreciated but not required.

This event is free and open to the public-- RSVP HERE.
